Previous Signage
The replaced signs were original dating back to the construction of the nature center in 1992, and they consisted of a few simple facts written in white vinyl lettering on brown metal. Although they had held up fairly well over the decades, they were not up to the modern aesthetics that visitors have come to expect from interpretive signage.
New Signage Designs
At Okeeheelee Nature Center, the design change between the original signage and the new signage reflects a modern appearance and brings the nature center into relevancy.
The newly installed signs highlight native South Florida flora, fauna, and ecosystems, while imparting key environmental concepts to visitors at the nature center. They are fresh, colorful, and vibrant, and help promote stewardship of natural sites and foster environmental stewards while improving the overall image the nature center. The production of the new signs was funded by the Friends of Okeeheelee Nature Center, through a generous grant provided by the Gorski Family Foundation.
Much of the work, including coordination, design, and installation, was done in-house by department staff. The Office of Public Engagement worked closely with Okeeheelee Nature Center staff to create the new layout. Colors and font choices reflected the nature center’s logo and branding styles, and factored in legibility, visual interest, and contrast with the outdoor surroundings.
Plant Identification Signs
Twelve new plant identification signs were also designed for the nature center. These signs feature hand-drawn sketches of each plant, drawn by nature center staff, along with photos and brief descriptions.
Goals and Outcomes
The main goal of the Okeeheelee Nature Centers’ interpretive signage project was to increase visitor interaction with the signage. As a result, this increase would help achieve the department’s goal of fostering environmental stewardship among nature center visitors. As visitors engage with the new, colorful signage, they would become more educated about the ecosystem, plants, and animals they encounter during their visit to each nature center. This fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature and the world around them.
